Strengths
Pharma Services focuses on product development, functioning as a virtual company. It also operates as a Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) and develops and manufactures products on behalf of other companies. Both elements of Pharma Services fulfil a research and development role for the SEVER stable of companies.
The product development wing of Pharma Services is based in Baarn, the Netherlands, and acts as a service provider to other companies for the development, registration and supply of pharmaceutical products. Its strength is that it rediscovers and repurposes highly effective drugs that, for whatever reason, have not been exploited to their full potential.
The CMO element of the company is based in Malmö, Sweden. Most standard CMOs offer only a manufacturing service, whereas Pharma Services operates as a ‘one-stop shop’, presenting it with a considerable advantage. Its strength lies in the sophistication of its unique technology and the access it offers to speciality formulations so that client companies have the opportunity to deliver drugs differently.
This part of the company has also pursued a highly successful niche strategy of developing polymer products, especially in the field of women’s health. Implants, vaginal rings, intrauterine devices are all examples of the company’s polymer products. These can be designed to deliver one or more drugs at a specified rate, for a specific period – sometimes for months at a time – and even at a desired location. The company’s vaginal ring allows for the gradual release of the contraceptive Annovera over an extended period, obviating the need for daily administration.
Again, most CDMOs are unable to offer this service, either in the developmental or commercial stages of the process. Another advantage of Pharma Services is its capacity to handle highly potent products, such as hormones, steroids and cytotoxic products, which few other CDMOs can. It is for this reason that the company produces Methotrexate for Nordic Pharma and will be producing Desmopressin for Amring USA, as well as drugs for numerous larger companies.
Pharma Services also starkly differentiates itself from its competitors with the global extent of its Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). This means the company is in compliance with the varying requirements of national and regional authorities. Whereas most companies will be in compliance with the EU, fewer companies will be able to meet the requirements of Japan, for example, or Australia, Brazil, Cuba and many Middle Eastern and African countries. With a global GMP, Pharma Services has access to all territories.
